Who are we
The Duval County Student Medical Society ( DCSMS ) is a voluntary non-profit student association, governed by an elected board of directors, dedicated to promoting the health of Duval County citizens and creating a medical learning experience for Duval County school students. The DCSMS is open to any student in Duval County, or the surrounding region, who meets the following requirements:
• Be interested in a career in the field of medicine or healthcare
• Commit to 10 hours of service for the DCSMS
• Be a student in good standing in their school with a GPA of 2.5 or higher
• Not have a class 3 or higher code of conduct violation
Our Mission
The mission of the Duval County Student Medical Society (DCSMS) is to provide healthcare educational experiences for students in Duval County and throughout North Florida through the promotion of delivery and access to high quality, ethical medical care for the community, using a model based on the Duval County Medical Society.
Our Vision
The vision that drives the DCSMS is the belief that bringing students with strong interests in healthcare careers together with successful healthcare providers in the community can provide practical, relevant, hand-on educational experiences for the students through involvement in appropriate community healthcare activities. We believe that reaching out to students throughout North Florida will expand the thinking of our members to see that healthcare has become much bigger than just a personal or local issue.
• Our mission focuses on the promotion of delivery of care and access to care. As students, we can’t directly provide most types of healthcare. But we can get actively involved in that care by acting to promote it. We stress both delivery of care and access to care because care can’t be delivered if patients can’t access it. Everyone wants high quality care. Providers want to give high quality care. But, as society gains a deeper understanding of the details of the human body and modern lives become more complex, it is much harder for human care givers to manage all the details needed for any given situation. Continuing to improve healthcare education to meet the new challenges is important. With complexity comes decisions. Sorting out the ethical questions in healthcare is a major concern of our country at this time. Our members will have to live and work in the world that results from big decisions now being made. We want to understand the critical questions and contribute our views to this process. DCSMS has many objectives that closely parallel those of the Duval County Medical Society. So we look to them for inspiration and support.
Our Approach
To achieve our mission, we plan to:
• Reach out to all students with an interest in professional healthcare careers across Northeast Florida, including them as members.
• Develop advisory groups which include healthcare providers, other community professional associations, faculty, parents and students from around the Northeast Florida region who share the mission of our organization.
• Create an attitude of unity among members which can extend beyond high school, possibly lasting a lifetime.
• Live in the ancient spirit of education, with a purpose to develop the mind, body, and soul.
• Provide educational resources for members in order to develop character, knowledge, and good judgment.
• Promote athletics and the physical wellbeing of the body.
• Provide cultural activities, philanthropy, and community service which promotes positive health and wellbeing.
• Promote and strengthen the image of Darnell-Cookman School of the Medical Arts.
• Strive to produce high quality and ethical medical education and care through honesty, perseverance and compassion.
